Michael Craig-Martin is a leading figure in British conceptual art. He was born in Dublin but studied in the United States where he was greatly influenced by American Minimalism and Pop Art. Over the last 50 years, through painting, drawing and sculpture, Craig-Martin has explored the relationship between form, image and language by depicting a range of everyday objects. He has developed a distinct style through his use of clear, bold outlines and flat planes of vibrant colours.
Craig-Martin is also widely recognised as an influential teacher. He taught at Goldsmith’s College of Art in London for over twenty years and his former students – such as Damien Hirst, Gary Hume and Sarah Lucas – include many of the artist who made such a significant impact on the art scene in the 1990s.
