Is this the first true ‘self-portrait’ of AI?

The first ‘self-portrait’ of an AI artist

A captivating new artwork has been unveiled that reveals the true face of AI-generated art - and it's a lot more human than you might expect. The AI ‘self-portrait’ was created as an initiative by Hiscox through a collaboration with 40 established artists.

This unique piece was built by blending the artists’ headshot photos and the result is a stylised painting that represents the human creativity and endeavour at the core of AI-generated art.

But what's the true purpose behind this ‘self-portrait’? Hiscox was on a mission to uncover the complex challenges faced by artists in today's AI-powered world. With the rise of generative AI models that can mimic and assimilate the artistic styles of human artists, the Hiscox Art and AI Report raised serious and complex questions such as the ethical dilemmas around compensation, copyright and fair use.

According to the report, over three-quarters of art collectors believe artists should be paid when their work is used by AI systems. Additionally, 82% of collectors and 76% of enthusiasts want clear labels to differentiate AI-generated art from man-made pieces.

The future of art and AI remains uncertain, but this ‘self-portrait’ is a smart representation of the complex issues at play. The industry will no doubt continue to deal with questions around the authenticity of AI-generated art in the years to come.
