Camouflage Portrait (Red), 2005

Camouflage Portrait (Red) is a self-portrait of the artist as Andy Warhol. Gavin Turk has taken Andy Warhol’s image as well as his iconic style of silkscreen painting. Turk plays with ideas of identity and authenticity. By appropriating imagery from both the art world and popular culture, often replacing subjects with himself, Turk explores notions of authorship and the perceived role of the artist. His work gained him notoriety in the early 1990s and he is considered to be one of the original “Young British Artists”.
