One of Nan Goldin’s most iconic images, Self-portrait in blue bathroom stands as a hauntingly beautiful snapshot of the countercultural life that the artist and her peers led in the late 1970s and 1980s. The work is part of the artist’s The Ballad of Sexual Dependency series, in which Goldin captured fleeting records of drug culture, sexual relationships, intimate moments between friends, love and loss. The series has become a cultural phenomenon and an integral archive of the AIDS crisis and underground culture in the 1980s.The first photograph in the series, Self-portrait in blue bathroom was presented in a slideshow, set to the backdrop of the Velvet Underground.
