Mask with Shield, 2012

Ricky Swallow uses ordinary materials to create formal sculptures cast in bronze. The hands-on process often starts with cardboard, tape and glue. These simple constructions are transformed into elegant and playful objects as they leave the foundry. Swallow’s work is influenced by twentieth century design, ceramics and folk-art. He scours flea markets for objects that he calls ‘make-dos’, antiques that are repaired or adapted and given an extended life rather than discarded. They are the starting point for many of his sculptural works.
