Why did you choose a summer internship at Hiscox?
Hasan Abdullah: As a student who is interested in pursuing a career in Technology, I was looking for an opportunity to gain some practical experience and learn from professionals in the field. I had heard from a friend who had previously interned at Hiscox that it was a friendly and supportive environment, where interns are treated as valued members of the team and given meaningful projects to work on.
Yingyan Liu: I used to have limited exposure to Finance and Insurance as a Software Engineering student, but I’ve always been fascinated by how technology can transform traditional industries. During my research, I was excited to learn that Hiscox is actively integrating technology like AI and broker software to stay competitive. Hiscox’s commitment to leveraging tech in innovative ways, along with its supportive culture, made Hiscox the perfect place for me to gain hands-on experience.
What does your day-to-day look like as a Technology Intern?
HA: I had the opportunity to explore areas of the business which aligned with my interests. An example is when I had the chance to collaborate with the data science team, applying academic knowledge to practical challenges, which was fulfilling. Hiscox offered me significant flexibility and independence, allowing me to work teams that aligned with my objectives.
YL: Each day during my internship at Hiscox is dynamic and filled with new challenges. My primary focus has been on projects within the automation testing team, where I’m gaining a deep understanding of our ongoing initiatives. However, what makes this experience unique is the encouragement to explore beyond my immediate role. I’ve connected with people across different departments to grasp how technology influences the company, leading me to take on tasks in areas that interest me, like Data Science.
What have you learned from completing an internship at Hiscox?
HS: I learned a lot from completing challenging and rewarding projects that have real impact on the business and the customers. I have improved my technical and soft skills, such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. I have also gained valuable insights into the insurance industry and how technology plays a key role in driving innovation and efficiency.
YL: During my internship at Hiscox, I’ve gained invaluable hands-on experience in various Tech areas, including Data Science, DevOps, and Solution Architecture amongst others. I've also developed strong teamwork skills and I’ve built meaningful connections within the industry, which I believe will be crucial for my future career. Beyond Technology, I’ve also acquired a deeper understanding of the insurance sector, which has broadened my perspective on how Tech can drive business innovation.
How would you describe the Hiscox York office?
HA: One of the things I love about working at Hiscox is the culture and atmosphere of the York office. The people are very friendly and helpful, and there is a nice balance between busy and relaxed days. There is also a strong sense of community and social responsibility, with various initiatives and activities that support local charities and causes.
YL: The Hiscox York office is a friendly, relaxing, and interesting place to work. The office is filled with vibrant artwork, making the space fun and inspiring. A standout feature is the giant rocket in the centre, which adds a unique touch. I love the office so much that I’ve been coming in as often as I can.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about doing an internship at Hiscox?
HA: My advice to someone who is thinking about doing an internship at Hiscox is to make the best of your time here; speak to as many people as possible, as they can provide valuable insights into their careers and roles. Be open-minded and curious, and don't be afraid to ask questions or seek help. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience!
