Joel Shapiro is best known for his geometric abstractions of the human figure. Working in both sculpture and on paper, Shapiro blurs the lines between figuration and abstraction through his compositions consisting of geometric blocks in vivid colours. These simple shapes are arranged in various configurations to suggest form moving in time and space.
Joel Shapiro has produced more than thirty commissions and publicly-sited sculptures in major Asian, European, and North American cities and has been the subject of more than 160 solo exhibitions and retrospectives internationally.
