Adam Pendleton is a conceptual artist known for his wide-ranging practice that includes painting, silkscreen, collage, video and performance. His work uses text and appropriated imagery to reconsider social resistance, avant-garde art, and under-represented historical moments. Black Lives Matter #3 is part of a body of work that the artist made for his inclusion in the 2015 Venice Biennale, and is centred around the now-historical rallying cry “Black Lives Matter.” By essentially making the slogan the artwork, Pendleton captures a moment in history and brings attention to social and racial controversies in the United States and beyond.
