Lick into Shape, 2021

Flora Yukhnovich’s work offers a contemporary take on the Rococo style of painting. Her paintings fluctuate between figuration and abstraction while mixing high art with popular culture. Lick into Shape was made during the artist’s residency in Venice where she was inspired by the music of Vivaldi, the memoirs of Casanova, and the frescoes of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This painting is based on a detail of a Tiepolo fresco that she experienced first-hand. Yukhnovich has intensified the colours and abstracted the imagery of the original with a flurry of loose and gestural brushstroke.
